CONCERT WORKS

Fanfare (1997)
for Steven Eggleston
5 Trumpets, 4 Horns, 2 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Fanfare for brass choir was commissioned by Steven Eggleston for the Illinois Wesleyan University Wind Ensemble's 1997 tour. The commission requested a fanfare in the manner of Richard Strauss's brass ensemble works which would introduce tour concerts. After a brief introduction the horns introduce a heroic strain. This is soon contrasted by a hymn-like tune and the justaposition of these two melodic ideas carries through the rest of the work. In honor of the IWU mascot (The Titans), the final calls invoke the climax of Mahler's First Symphony, which is sometimes called the "Titan."
- Cleveland. August, 1998.

Praise for Fanfare:
"Peter's passion for writing for brass instruments is certainly evident in his Fanfare. The work is challenging, exciting and a wonderful addition to the brass repertoire. This Fanfare has my highest endorsement."

Steven Eggleston, Director of Bands and Orchestras, Illinois Wesleyan University.
"Peter Gilbert is one of the fast-rising young stars in today's galaxy of composers. His Fanfare is one of the most exciting new compositions for brass ensemble I know of. It is a tour de force of brilliantly idiomatic brass writing. I have performed it several times, and both players and audience alike loved it. I highly recommend it."
Robert Grechesky, Music Director and Conductor, Indianapolis Brass Choir. Professor of Music, Butler University.
