Intrada (2001)
for Percussion Quartet

Intrada, which is written entirely without pitch, creates its formal architecture with two elements of music not regularly used for large structural shaping: speed of pulse and timbre. After a sort of call to arms the group sets off on a two-minute long accelerando (where the pulse gradually speeds up). The peak of this gesture thunders out the opening call and then launches into a "groove" with booming recollections of the beginning. Over the course of this groove the timbre (or color of the instruments) gets higher and higher, accentuated by the clanging brake drums (actual car brake drums!) until the groove disintegrates into the splashing and scraping of cymbals. The groove soon marshals itself together and the piece ends in a final grand accelerando.
