Pulses (2001)
for Full Orchestra : 2,2,2,2 * 4,3,3,1 * 3 + Timp. * Strings
Pulses begins with several chains of pulses whose accents eventually evolve into a sort of rhythmic melody. After pushing towards a fanfare-filled climax the orchestra recedes into a less brightly colored middle section featuring the bassoon, trombone, viola and cello. This grows into a loud orchestral pounding that instigates the return of the opening's pulses. Bigger and louder than before, the piece drives to the finish, ending in a blaze of light. Pulses was composed for and premiered by Andrew King and the Carmel High School Orchestra.
