Scherzabolique (2000)
for Solo Piano
Scherzabolique is a rather tongue-in-cheek title whose "diabolical" reference is more for the pianist than for the listener. The opening thunders with a Rachmaninoff-like showmanship before plunging into the scherzo (which may remind of Prokofiev's Suggestion Diabolique, though there was no specific modeling). From start to finish the nearly-over-the-top pounding, rock-style energy seems to be attempting to over-match the instrument itself.
