CONCERT WORKS

String Quartet (2000)

I. Molto agitato
II. Moderata [attacca]
III. Allegro

This quartet was begun in Paris in the summer of 1999. The first movement was completed in August 2000 during a residency at Treehaven, Wisconsin. The last two movements were completed in the following two months. The dedication is to my friend, teacher and mentor, David Vayo. Among his many gifts, his natural intuition for gracefully sophisticated rhythm continues to be a source of inspiration and edification.

The first movement is a hard-edged perpetual motion machine, driven by unrelenting counterpoint. The five-note cluster in the opening three bars spells out the chromatically winding motive that never lets go throughout the work. The cello begins the second movement with a poignantly strained half-step which grows for the entire movement with a tune slowly emerging towards the end. When the movement finally reaches its peek the half-step is four octaves apart. The third movement begins directly with the violin and cello hammering out the half-step in this position. The pulse persists through the finale, returning in the end to the first movementıs tempo.
