Yellow Roses was composed for violinist Sarah Brough (of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra) and her sister, oboist Amy Brough Kessler. The luminous, sunny quality of the piece grew out of the inspiration drawn from their radiant personae. A long melody, gently quiet despite the tinges of chromaticism, acts as a refrain throughout the work. Two interveening sections of counterpoint (independent melodic lines with intertwining relationships) provide both repose and forward motion, while the refrain is brighter and more ecstatic with each return. The piece ends and softly and humbly, finally concluding with the guitar strums from the opening of the piece.
