2007 Online Student Handbook

Welcome to the YCP!
We are pleased that you will be joining us at the Young Composers Program this year. The week will be an intensive exploration of compositional techniques, styles, and issues, as participants become acquainted with each other's music as well as important recent repertoire. We have assembled a talented group of students, and we are sure that you will learn a good deal from each other as well as from the faculty and guest artists. You will also be working with a terrific team of musicians in the YCP Ensemble who will be focussed all week on rehearsing and performing your music.

The Cleveland Institute of Music and University Circle
The YCP has as its setting one of the finest music conservatories in the world. The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) community consists of world-renowned artists/teachers and their students, some of whom are already nationally and even internationally acclaimed themselves. There are two performance halls, classrooms, practice rooms, a library, a music bookstore and a lounge with snack machines.

CIM is located on the Case Western Reserve University campus in the cultural hub of Cleveland, known as University Circle. Within five minute's walk of CIM one can find Severance Hall (home of the Cleveland Orchestra), The Cleveland Museum of Art (one of the country's great museums and FREE to visitors), The Cleveland Botanical Gardens (a wonderful place to take a walk and literally smell the roses) and several other museums, architectural highlights and higher learning institutions.

Tuition
The full cost of the 2007 Young Composers Program is $825.
A non-refundable $100 deposit is due May 14th to reserve your place on the YCP roster. If the deposit is not received your position is made available to people on the waiting list. If you have any special needs with regards to the deposit contact Peter Gilbert (617) 869-3211 immediately.

The remaining $725 of tuition is due in full on June 1st. Payments should be made out to "The Cleveland Institute of Music" and sent to:

International students will need to include a photocopy of the identification portion of their passport with their response cards. This allows the Cleveland Institute to issue an I-20 affirming "student status" ultimately allowing the student's family to avoid a significant amount of paperwork.

Preparing Your Music for the YCP
At the YCP each student has a work coached and performed by the YCP Ensemble [Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano]. Students will be given an assigned instrumentation shortly after acceptance in the program and will be notified by email.

Students should submit one work with a maximum length of 8 minutes for their assigned combination of those instruments (based on their submitted preferences). We ask that students send in two copies of the score (one bound, one unbound) and a complete set of parts. If the players are to perform from the score, or the piece is for solo instrument, then additional bound copies of the score can be used as parts. Please also send a short program note for your piece.

In summary the following items
  • 2 copies of the score (1 bound, 1 unbound) for the YCP Ensemble (no longer than 8 minutes)
  • a complete set of parts
  • a short program note for your piece
  • the completed information sheets accompanying this packet
should arrive by July 1st at this address:
Young Composers Program

Cleveland Institute of Music
11021 East Blvd.
Cleveland, OH 44106
Scores must be copied double-sided and bound. Spiral or comb binding (available at copy shops) will allow the parts to lie flat on the stand. If you have access to a tape-binder, there is a special tape binding technique which works as well. A booklet format can be created by copying 4 8.5x11 pages onto 11x17 paper (2 on the front and 2 on the back). The large paper is folded in half and stapled along the fold. The booklet requires careful attention so as to be sure the pages come out in the right order! Do not send scores stapled in the corner.
    Your score should include:
  • Title of piece and your name on the front cover
  • Instrument names or abbreviations to the left of every system
  • (excepting solo or solo and piano works)
  • Measure numbers (even in solo works, unless barlines are not used)
  • Rehearsal numbers or letters
  • All time and key signature changes (If the change occurs in the first bar of a system, a courtesy time or key signature should appear at the end of the previous system.)
  • Dynamic, phrasing and expressive markings
  • Double check to ensure that all necessary accidentals are included
Parts with more than 3 pages may likely need to be bound. If parts are not bound the pages should be taped together accordion style, so that the part holds together as a single unit. In lengthy music that is very continuous it can be difficult to work out page turns. Try to find the simplest solution for the page organization of the part.
Reminders for the score are also applicable for preparation of the parts as well as the following:
  • The instrument name in the upper left hand corner of the first page
  • Title of piece and your name
  • Rehearsal letters or numbers should match those in the score. If a rehearsal letter or number occurs during a multiple-measure rest, the block rest should be broken into two or more shorter blocks so that the performer can see where the letter or number falls.
  • Double check (even if you use computer software) to see that your parts accurately reflect the score.
  • Parts must be formatted to allow time for performers to turn the page (excepting possibly the piano part).
